During the summer, we attend many outdoor markets. We love seeing so many people enjoying the warm weather, exploring local businesses, and spending time with family and friends. Summer markets have such a cheerful atmosphere, and it’s one of our favourite seasons.
However, summertime isn’t always sunny.
So, what do we do when the weather takes a turn?
1. Protect Our Handmade Products
Our first priority is protecting our products.
Many of Tokita Kobo’s items are handcrafted using authentic kimono silk and vintage Japanese cotton fabrics. Since these materials can easily be damaged by water, we quickly cover our displays, move products away from the edges of the tent, and pack away anything that could get wet.
A few minutes of rain can damage fabrics that have been carefully preserved for decades, so every second counts.

After this storm, some items were wet but they got dry after the sun came up. However, our business cards were completely soaked. We need to display with items to dry out.
2. Secure Our Tent
Strong winds can be even more dangerous than rain.
We check our tent weights, secure display racks, and remove anything that might blow away. Safety always comes first—not only for us but also for our customers and neighboring vendors.
Sometimes several vendors work together to hold down tents until the strongest winds pass. One of the best parts of the market community is how everyone helps each other during difficult weather.
This year at the Handmade Market, we were hit by strong winds. Even though neighboring vendors rushed over to help a ceramic vendor secure their booth, several of their beautiful handmade bowls and other pottery pieces were blown over and broken.
It was heartbreaking to see.
3. Wait Patiently
Once everything is safe, there isn’t much left to do except wait.
The market becomes quiet as visitors find shelter, and vendors take a short break while watching the weather radar and hoping the storm passes quickly.
It’s a reminder that outdoor markets are full of surprises, and flexibility is part of the job.
4. Welcome Everyone Back
The best moment comes when the rain stops.
The clouds begin to clear, fresh air fills the market, and people slowly return with smiles on their faces. Often, the market feels even more lively after a storm because everyone is grateful for the sunshine.
Those moments remind us why we love outdoor events despite the unpredictable weather.
Every Market Has a Story
Many people only see the finished display and the handmade products on our table. Behind the scenes, however, every market includes early mornings, careful preparation, changing weather, and a lot of teamwork.
Whether it’s bright sunshine or an unexpected storm, we’re always grateful for everyone who stops by our booth to support handmade businesses.
