Japanese fashion is often associated with elegance, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for tradition. This workshop offers a practical way to engage with those elements—by creating a handmade accessory using authentic kimono fabric, reimagined for modern use. We are grateful to Anime North for the opportunity to host a cultural workshop.
A Design Rooted in the Taisho Era

The inspiration for this workshop comes from Japan’s Taisho period, known for its blend of Western influence and traditional aesthetics. The result was a distinctive “Taisho Roman” style—romantic, slightly retro, and expressive. The kimono bow you will create reflects this balance, combining soft structure with visually rich textile patterns.
Create Your Own Kimono Bow

Participants will have access to a curated selection of upcycled kimono fabrics, each with unique colors and motifs. Through guided, step-by-step instruction, you will assemble your own bow, learning how to handle the material and construct the shape.
Once completed, the bow can be finished in one of two ways:
- As a metal keychain
- As a hair clip

This flexibility allows the piece to function either as a wearable accessory or a decorative item. (Bows on the photos are same size)
Accessible for All Skill Levels
The workshop is designed to be beginner-friendly. No prior sewing experience is required, and the construction process does not depend on advanced techniques.
- Sewing tools are not necessary for completion
- Needles and thread will be available for those who prefer to use them
- Careful handling of tools is required when in use
The focus remains on accessibility while still providing a hands-on, meaningful experience.
