In today’s fast fashion culture, where clothing is often treated as disposable, traditional garments like kimono stand as a reminder of craftsmanship, longevity, and beauty that should never be wasted.
But did you know that kimono are also being thrown away at an alarming rate in Japan?
According to a report by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment:

Over 500,000 tons of clothing—including kimono—are discarded each year in Japan.
Around 68% of these garments are burned or thrown away as general waste, without being reused or recycled.
This means more than 60% of newly supplied clothing is simply thrown away—never getting a second chance.
This isn’t just about waste.
It’s about throwing away our culture—the artistry, the stories, and the generations of care that each kimono holds.
Mottainai — A Japanese Philosophy of Waste Not

At Tokita Kobo, our work is grounded in the Japanese spirit of:
“Mottainai kara tsukau”
(もったいないから使う – We reuse it because it would be too wasteful not to.)
“Mottainai” is a word deeply embedded in Japanese culture. It reflects a sense of regret when something is wasted—whether it’s time, food, or in this case, a beautifully crafted kimono.
By upcycling old kimono into bags, accessories, and clothing, we give new purpose to materials that would otherwise be forgotten. Every piece we create is a second life for a fabric that once carried someone’s memories—now ready to bring new joy.
Another part of our spirit is the belief that we should not waste our culture.
We believe that sharing our cultural traditions is one of the most important ways to pass them on from the older generation to the next.
By giving these fabrics a new life and telling their stories, we are keeping this beautiful heritage alive and relevant for the future.
Sustainable Fashion That Tells a Story

Unlike fast fashion, kimono are made to last. The fabrics are often hand-dyed, woven with intricate patterns, and sewn with care. By repurposing them:
- We reduce textile waste
- We honor the artisans behind the original garment
- We share traditional culture in a form that’s easy to wear every day
Our creations may be modern in style, but they carry with them the legacy of tradition and sustainability.
