On the Winter Solstice, a traditional food is azuki bean porridge. This custom originated in China but has become very common in Japan as well.
Eating azuki bean porridge on the winter solstice traces back to an ancient Chinese tradition. In China, red-colored foods like azuki beans were believed to ward off evil spirits. By preparing and eating this porridge, people prayed for the health of their families. This tradition eventually spread to Japan, where it became customary to eat azuki bean porridge on the winter solstice.
Although this custom isn’t widely embraced in my very international household, I decided to try making it for a late breakfast on my own.
With warmth, my stomach was filled with the essence of our culture!
